baby chickadees and baby alligators

2003-04-01 - 9:10 a.m.

The baby chickadees have hatched. I could hear their tiny voices as I walked by the nest box this morning. It's possible that they hatched some days earlier and only now have become loud enough to be heard.

BF mentioned that he saw a light frost on the ground yesterday morning, which explains why the Basil plants look somewhat aggrieved. I think they'll all be OK, except for the one with the broken stem, because the "bad" leaves are only very lightly touched with brown. It may have been a record-breaking low for the morning of March 31.

It's April Fool's Day, but I'm not good at thinking up imaginative foolery. Every year or so, I take BF aside and tell him that there is a baby alligator in the backyard, and every five years or so, he pretends to believe it for a minute or two.

later

I couldn't resist. I sneaked a real quick peek, maybe three seconds at the most. There are at least two baby birds that I saw clearly, probably more. They are fairly large-sized birds -- they didn't just hatch out this morning.

A few minutes later, the female came and did a shiver/begging routine to get food from the male. He is run ragged feeding the babies and feeding her. Of course, I'm making grand assumptions about who is male and who is female based on behavior. The two adults are identical in appearance.
