war of the suet cake
2004-04-02 - 8:48 a.m.
Ronnie laid an egg yesterday but I didn't want to post it because I was afraid people would think it was an April Fool's.
Yesterday I saw something funny on the suet feeder. A Starling came to snack, and the Mockingbird hurried over to chase him away. I noticed a Chickadee sitting in the pine tree and figured he was going to sneak some suet while the bigger birds were busy. Instead, the Chickadee decided to buzz down and strike the Mockingbird on the head while he had his chance.
I put a fresh suet cake out less than ten minutes ago, thanks to the bitterness and sulks of the Mockingbird pair, who were stomping melodramatically all over the feeder. I've already had the Mockingbirds, the Starling, and currently the male Red-Bellied Woodpecker take a taste. At least one of the Chickadees is watching but is apparently content to hold back until the bigger birds finish. Maybe it's a question of picking your battles.
Oops, the Woodpecker has left, and here come two Common Grackles. I don't especially object to Grackles, with their flashing feathers that catch the sunlight, but they eat too much and bring too many friends. If I put suet out every day, so that they could rely on it, they'd brag to every Grackle they knew, and soon it would be like raccoons.
Hummingbird Report: Lots of 'em last night. I was sitting on the porch where I could hear the wings buzz imperiously when they hovered. Males and females, and if it wasn't my imagination, at least once a male hesitated and did a little spin in the air instead of instantly chasing the female away. So far this morning just the one beautiful adult male.
